Global Health Grand Rounds - Dr. Thomas Burke

Join us on Wednesday April 5th 5-6PM for Global Health Grand Rounds. Dr. Thomas Burke will be speaking about "Innovating for Health Transformation in Resource Limited Settings"

 

Thomas F. Burke, MD, FACEP, FRSM, is chief of the Division of Global Health and Human Rights in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a practicing emergency physician, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Burke has extensive experience in the public health arena as a senior emergency physician, a faculty member and researcher, and as a leader in the global health sector directing health interventions for the poor and vulnerable, for over 23 years.

Dr. Burke was the founding director of the MGH Center for Global Health, the African Institute for Health Transformation, the Ujenzi Charitable Trust and the popular Harvard Summer School program held in Kenya, Innovating for Health Transformation in Africa. Prior to joining MGH, Dr. Burke served 7 ½ years in the United States Army, including several overseas deployments, followed by a tenure as associate clinical director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a faculty member for the hospital’s Division of International Health and Humanitarian Programs. Dr. Burke has established training programs for physicians and midwives in Zambia, Liberia, Kenya and South Sudan. He is widely recognized as an expert on disruptive innovations for the poor and consequently holds several prestigious grants and awards, most of which focus on saving and improving the lives of vulnerable women and children. Dr. Burke is an active leader in the discovery, acceleration and global scale phases of several widely recognized award winning solutions for intractable health challenges confronting the poor. He is often invited to speak at high-profile forums and leading universities around the globe, and he is widely published. Dr. Burke serves on the Harvard Medical School Committee on Admissions and the Harvard University Center for African Studies. He earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College and his two Bachelors’ degrees in Neuroscience and Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts.
